[Guided Meditation] Connecting To The Emotional Roots Of Your Choices

Focus

Welcome. This meditation supports the Stage One task of connecting to the emotional roots of your choices. This is a task where you are asked to think of major choices in your life, and dig to find the true emotional roots of those choices. The most challenging part of this task is being honest with yourself about why you chose to do what you did, without judgement. Because you need brutally honest answers here, you must not judge yourself, or regret past decisions. You must detach from your past self and view it from afar. This meditation will support the detachment, honesty and non-judgement needed for this task.

Posture

Take a moment to get comfortable. You can sit or stand or lay down. It’s doesn’t matter. You can close your eyes or keep them open. Do what works for you.

Presence

Take a slow deep breath. Let it out like a sigh of relief. Be at peace. You are here now. Take another slow deep breath, and this time, send it out slowly, consciously, with purpose, all the way. Be at peace. You are here now. Pause and repeat these breaths until you feel relaxed and at peace.

Journey

We begin in the mind. Think back to a major decision in your life. Perhaps one that did not end very well. See yourself there like you are watching a movie. Feel the distance of time between now and then. See the space and time expending between the you now and the you back then. You are not that person anymore. Time and experience have changed you. Each day, you have evolved further away from who you were, and further toward who you will be.

Bring your attention now to your heart. Feel love for who you used to be, like the love for an old friend. Mistaken, sure. We all make mistakes. But worthy of love.

Focus on the beat of your heart. Focus on the feelings there. Is there energy moving? Is there emotion. Let it move.

Ask yourself why that version of you made the choice that they made. Ask why again. Why again. Keep asking why until you get to the real emotional root. Was it fear? Was it loneliness? Was it unworthiness? Was it something else? Let your heart tell you the truth.

Sit with this in acceptance for a little while. Imagine sitting with your past self, two old friends, offering compassion for the truth.

Acknowledging this truth feels freeing. Sit with this freedom for a little while. And the freedom feels like joy-love, our natural state. Yes.

The truth allows us to let this go. Feel gratitude for this truth and this release.

Return

When you are ready, bring your awareness back to your surroundings. Notice how you feel. Take this feeling with you and return to it anytime you like. We see now how our choices multiply the emotion at the root for them. In difficult moments and major decisions, detach from your current self to acknowledge the truth. Use that understanding for better decisions.
