Years ago, I found myself sitting next to one of my closest girlfriends; baffled at my current situation I poured out what had happened; expecting her to simply commiserate and say, “yeah that’s bizarre.” Which she did, but soon shock on her face was replaced by resolution. She took a deep breath and said, “I’m going to take my church hat off now…,” her way of saying that God may not want to hear what she was about to say. She proceeded to lay down the harsh truth. It was the truth, and I knew it. But someone had to make me face it. They say the truth hurts, but that the truth will set you free. Sounds like medicine or that painful procedure you’ve been putting off, doesn’t it? Looking back, I don’t think anything has given me more relief than the truth. Sometimes I was the one that needed to hear it and sometimes I was the one who was dishing it out. You get that look in your eyes because you knew the truth all along, but someone had to open your eyes and make you look at it; a look followed inevitably by a look of freedom and profound relief at living in reality. More often than not, we avoid the truth of our situation but can anchor ourselves in the truth of who we are. Both are relevant. Look at the entirely of your world today… What truth are you avoiding? More importantly, what truth can anchor you today?
