My Love Is Away

My love is away. And that familiar feeling of something lost has enveloped me like a blanket. “There’s something about your presence, lost at a distance,”- Lost At A Distance, Album: Finding Zen. What is it that you miss about your love when they are away? I don’t just mean away for the day at work; but away for the night. Whatever we miss, it is not replaced by texts, calls or even video chats. Maybe it’s not the sound of their voice, but the warmth of their breath on your neck as they whisper to you. Maybe it’s not seeing their face, but touching it and feeling their smile under your finger tips. Maybe it’s not hearing what they are thinking about, it’s seeing them laugh as you feel yourself erupt in laughter at the same time. It’s something mysterious, for certain as I have written songs about it and never quite figured it out. In “Lost at a Distance”, I figured out that it is something I cannot describe but it is something about my love’s warmth, tone, heart, and…. and I don’t know what. In “Be With Me”, off the Unpacked album, I gave it another try and figured out that it has something to do with how everything I do seems muted and grey when my love is gone. Maybe we miss the effect they have on us – they light us up and bring color and vibrancy to our world. It’s not quite as bad when they are gone just to work for the day, knowing they will return tonight. Maybe it’s knowing that we will not have the comfort of their embrace at the end of the day; and the way it seems to wash all the bad, negative and hardness of life away with a squeeze. What I do know, is that I go about my day, doing pretty much exactly what I would have been doing if he was here, except with so much less purpose. And maybe that’s it. If our purpose on this Earth is to love, then we have lost our purpose when love is away. Maybe it’s just that simple: “Distance at dawn, purpose gone.” – Be With Me (Album: Unpacked).
