This song was written as we were in the middle of sending off several children to college. The process of parents clinging to their kids, trying to reign them in and the child working to break free is an age-old tale and one that we were living constantly. This is about a parent’s calculated attempt to induce the natural need within their child to break free by tightening the fences until they do, all with the end in mind of a more independent adult child who can handle themselves; and the sadness that comes with sending your babies off into the big bad world. You know that no life is without tragedy, sadness and situations that test you and you can’t stand the idea of your child in such a situation but you have to let them go. I still cannot sing this without crying, so you will not see a couch video of this one and will rarely hear it in concert. On the official recording, I let the tears come and the real emotion be recorded. Ge the tissues….
