I have studied old languages, new languages, light languages, and speaking in tongues (the old name for light language). I find them all fascinating and I enjoy exploring them and how they make me feel. But there is a unique challenge here. When seeking to describe the divine, or divine experience, or otherwise express divine concepts like love, oneness, nonduality, and the like, words are inherently limiting. In fact, here we are right now, trying to use words to express something that is larger than words. The irony is not lost on me! But stay with me here. Words are all I have when communicating through the screen.
A great example is love. The word love does not manage to express the full nature of what love is. So we get more specific. We might say unconditional love, or divine unconditional love. Adding more words makes the concept more specific, thereby limiting the idea even further, rather than expanding to express the full concept. That’s my point. Words restrict meaning. It works just fine for concepts rooted in our four dimensional existence (3D plus Time). I have no problem fully describing a tomato. But I have a hard time fully expressing infinite concepts with finite words.
Back in my first year of grad school, I took my first logic class and we talked about all the wonderful kinds of infinity that we might think about and how some infinities are larger than others. We had finite little symbols to denote various infinities. In that class, describing the infinite with finite words and symbols worked, because we were trying to make infinite concepts digestible to our finite human minds. Finite symbols and finite words helped to make an exotic concept understandable enough to work with it mathematically. The real lesson for me was that the infinite can be made finite-ish for long enough to work with it. But was that really UNDERSTANDING the infinite? No. I don’t think so. We just learned how to work with it. In the same way, we work with gravity quite well, creating airplanes and rockets and satellites in orbit. But gravity is perhaps one of the least well understood forces. We don’t really understand it, but we can work with it.
That is why thousands of spiritual books, podcasts and discussions exist today and are so helpful. They take infinite concepts and give them enough words that you can work with the idea and make progress. But are we doomed to never really understand the full nature of things like being in a state of divine love, or source itself? While we have these finite human minds, can we ever really understand the fullness of our divinity?
My guess is that we CAN understand. When you read the words of many authors, it becomes clear that many of them do in fact understand, or have experienced the fullness of the infinite. But here they are, with only finite words to express it. I bet, if you looked in their eyes, they would convey so much more. It is hard to feel something infinite and profound and not be able to convey it completely.
I wonder if you could convey such understanding through energy, which is infinite? It is worth a try.
