Watercolor on canvas. 12×24. 2014. After shooting the cover for my first album, Finding Zen, I was shocked to look at the untouched photo and find myself beautiful. At 39 years old at the time, I had not ever thought of myself as beautiful, or thought of my body as a work of art. I needed to explore that – why had I not felt that way before? How could I continue to feel that way? I decided to do a watercolor study of the photo and this painting resulted. It forced me to confront my body image and the past situations that had shaped it; thereby creating a new one. To that end, I cannot recommend enough that everyone should pose nude at some point and observe themselves as art. In this particular setting, I am shown with my favorite guitar. Which is the art and which the instrument? They are each both.
