(Yes, almost precisely as I had finished writing Big Crazy Good). Feeling my grief deeply, I was compelled to write this song. It’s about Howard in particular but I bet there are lots of us that have someone important in their lives that guided them and advised them and taught them about life; and that somehow, after death, they are still around to guide us. This is an exceptionally hard song for me to sing or even to mix without crying. On the track, I allowed my emotion to come through. I hope it will help remind you that those we have lost are still guiding us, if we can open ourselves to seeing it.

Chords And Lyrics

No Capo

Em
Seems like you had nine lives
Cadd9
Dodging bullets till the end what a fight
Am D
Always one step ahead of the others of the others

Em
You were there when others ran
Cadd9
hard truth and helping hand
Am D
It was you, when I couldn’t trust all the others all the others

G Cadd9 Am D
Still with me Right behind me Trying to guide me

G Cadd9 Am D
Still with me Right behind me Trying to guide me (and it wasn’t easy)

G
Still with me still with me
Cadd9
I hear your voice in my mind and I know
Am D
Still with me still with me So hard to let you go

G
Still with me still with me
Cadd9
I hear your voice in my mind and I know
Am D
Still with me still with me I have to let you go

Em
Slow just wasn’t your style
Cadd9
On to the next full speed all the while
Am D
Always one step ahead of the others of the others

Em
You had faith in all I could be
Cadd9
I bet it wasn’t just me
Am D
I could fill this room with the others all the others

G Cadd9 Am D
Still with me Right behind me Trying to guide me

G Cadd9 Am D
Still with me Right behind me Trying to guide me (and it wasn’t easy)

G
Still with me still with me
Cadd9
I hear your voice in my mind and I know
Am D
Still with me still with me So hard to let you go

G
Still with me still with me
Cadd9
I hear your voice in my mind and I know
Am D
Still with me still with me I have to let you go

Break:
Em
And I know just what you’d say
Cadd9
I didn’t teach you to live that way
Am
Go out there and seize this day
D
What did i tell you

(single strum)
G Cadd9 Am D

G Cadd9 Am D
Still with me Right behind me Trying to guide me (and it wasn’t easy)

(full strum)
G
Still with me still with me
Cadd9
I hear your voice in my mind and I know
Am D
Still with me still with me So hard to let you go

G
Still with me still with me
Cadd9
I hear your voice in my mind and I know
Am D (slowing)
Still with me still with me I have to let you go

A deeply personal original song, with chords and lyrics, written in grief after the death of the author’s mentor and father-figure — about how those who guided us in life seem to remain with us, still guiding, after they are gone.

[30,20
328,329,156,335,69

post-728","project","type-project","status-publish","hentry","project_category-becoming","project_category-music","project_tag-becoming","project_tag-death","project_tag-guides","project_tag-mentors","project_tag-music
For anyone grieving a mentor or loved one who shaped them.
