What I see, more often than not, is that we favor one side of our nature over the other, and become imbalanced as a result. For example, you may be a very task oriented person quite naturally and maybe that was encouraged growing up, but now you have a hard time finding stillness and peace. Or maybe you are a very creative person naturally and find that you have trouble finishing things. These imbalances cause us frustration and stress. We judge ourselves harshly and compare ourselves to those who favor the other half that we can’t seem to grasp with any longevity. We think, “I wish I was like them.”

But swinging to the other extreme will not bring balance. To bring balance, and the peaceful equanimity that comes with it, we need equal parts yin and yang. But how?

You can always do yin things in yin ways and yang things in yang ways. Dance ecstatically. Workout like a Navy Seal. Paint with abandon. You might balance these out over the course of a day or a week. But if you would prefer a little less oscillation, and a little more peace and equanimity, you could balance out each activity that you do during the day.

What if you could blend yin and yang qualities into every moment of the day? Here is a method that came to me recently.

Do Yang things with creativity, flow and sacredness. Do Yin things with focus, planning and discipline.

Yin, the divine feminine, is associated with certain tasks and certain qualities. For example, artistic tasks, and qualities like flow, creativity and sacredness. Yang, the divine masculine, is associated with its own set of tasks and qualities. For example yang activities are task oriented, with qualities of planning, discipline, linear thinking, and focus.

In any moment, you are doing SOMETHING. You are resting, creating, putting in effort on a work project, being social, etc. If you carry out that activity using the opposite qualities, you may find a more satisfying and balanced experience. Let’s look at some examples.

Weightlifting – this is a task oriented yang effort. Try including a focus on breath, and treating the the task as sacred. The body is sacred. The weights are sacred. You are a steward of both. You may find that your lift is more focused and less prone to injury.

Painting – this is a flowing and creative yin effort. Try having a particular focused process for setting up and cleaning up, with a flow state while actually painting. You may find that your flow state is actually deeper as it contrasts to balance with the structure of the set up and cleanup.

Work Projects – these are most often yang efforts. Try bringing an element of sacredness, and gratitude to each task. Even that spreadsheet can be sacred, with each cell infused with gratitude for the work, and for the gift of insight that it will reveal. You are a steward of this sacred information. You may find that your work is more accurate, efficient and focused.

Balancing the yin and yang in every activity seems to emphasize the effects of both, rather than dampen them. Balanced activities are simultaneously focused, disciplined, creative, and flowing. Give it a try! Does it give you the best of both worlds? Creativity with completion? Flow with focus? See what it does for you and let me know.

A practical teaching on balancing yin and yang by blending their qualities within each activity, doing task-oriented work with sacredness and flow while doing creative work with focus and discipline, to find equanimity in every moment.

[1886,1888,31
36,2069,1429,654,180,900,280,649,981,2052,947,1452,1857,977,489,309,1012,1248,655,112,302,186,979,978,284,980,605,332,1361,283

post-6076","project","type-project","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","project_category-57challenges","project_category-consciousness","project_category-observations","project_tag-art","project_tag-books","project_tag-business","project_tag-complete-connection","project_tag-connection","project_tag-consciousness","project_tag-cycle","project_tag-cycle-of-human-development","project_tag-finding-peace","project_tag-guided-meditations","project_tag-human-development","project_tag-lasting-peace","project_tag-lastingpeace-org","project_tag-life-optimization","project_tag-meditation","project_tag-money","project_tag-podcasts","project_tag-poetry","project_tag-purna-asatti","project_tag-relationships","project_tag-religion","project_tag-science","project_tag-seeing-yourself","project_tag-self-mastery","project_tag-self-development","project_tag-self-improvement-2","project_tag-self-understanding","project_tag-society","project_tag-spirituality","project_tag-stages
For anyone who feels lopsided toward doing or dreaming and wants more balance.
