That is how long my kitchen – THE central room in the house – has been in ruins and in the slow process of rising from the ashes. The first five weeks saw my own and my husband’s effort and these last two weeks saw a crew of up to four people at a time occupying my kitchen, driveway, garage and more. I felt the chaos. Dust covers every room continuously despite our daily efforts to clean.

Disorder has its effects. I was on high alert the whole time. For me, transition to a new way of doing things is stressful, even if that new way is better. For me, visitors in my home or private space is stressful, even if they are kind and wonderful people. My son and husband also felt the stress. We all needed extra compassion, extra hugs, and extra care. All because our place of peace and order was not at all peaceful or in order.

It shows me that we all need a place of peace, calm and order that we can retreat to. A clean, quiet and happy place that speaks of warmth, caring and love. I don’t think I understood the depth of that. Such a space for our ancestors might have looked like a cave or hut with a nightly fire. The fire can be that place of peace. Routines and family can be that place of peace. It does not have to be a physical space but when the physical space is in chaos, it is next to impossible for routines, people and things to shoulder the load of comforting everyone.

For those who live in precarious conditions, war zones, family fights, and other forms of chaos, I can only begin to imagine how hard it could be to create a place of peace. Such a space, however small, allows us to think and work on ourselves, progress toward our goals, and generally do the kinds of things that forward us to our purpose. Chaos puts us in survival mode. The more severe the chaos, the deeper into survival mode we go. We are just trying to get through it.

It is a beautiful thing to NOT be in survival mode. The luxury of time and mental space to think and the quiet of a peaceful environment allow the whispers of the universe through. Such spaces – physical, temporal and mental – accelerate our natural development. Chaos stifles it.

How will you create that kind of space for yourself? How can you reduce the chaos in your daily life?

A personal reflection sparked by a seven-week kitchen renovation on how physical chaos pushes us into survival mode, and why a place of peace and order is essential for growth, creativity, and self-development.

[1886,31
100,216,180,282,311,136,281,153,844,221,104,308,57,845,843,197,285,284,408,165,87,846

post-1123","project","type-project","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","project_category-57challenges","project_category-observations","project_tag-chaos","project_tag-children","project_tag-connection","project_tag-development","project_tag-emotions","project_tag-home","project_tag-human","project_tag-life","project_tag-mental-space","project_tag-mind","project_tag-order","project_tag-peace","project_tag-perspective","project_tag-physical-space","project_tag-quiet","project_tag-self-discovery","project_tag-self-growth","project_tag-self-development","project_tag-space","project_tag-time","project_tag-truth","project_tag-war
For readers feeling frayed by disorder at home or in life.
