Lately, I have been offered some cool opportunities. I am grateful for each and every one of them. But critical to maintaining balance and space in your time and attention is the art of saying no to some things and yes to others. So how do you choose? There are lots of ways to decide. You can classify opportunities as exciting or boring, profitable or a liability, resume building or not, etc. Right now, I have a personal rule that I should avoid subjugating myself to anyone for any reason. There are some exceptions (such as my spiritual teachers), but they are very carefully chosen. Beyond that, an opportunity has to be exciting to me personally. Then it gets the YES. <\/span><\/p>\n

But here\u2019s the deal – how you choose must change over time with the seasons of your life. When you are young, or starting over in a new endeavor\/career\/industry, it\u2019s a good idea to subjugate yourself to mentors, teachers and managers. You should say yes to as many opportunities as you can handle. You might pay a teacher to teach you something. You do the work that they ask so that you can learn. This is a beneficial type of subjugation. <\/span><\/p>\n

As you move towards your later years or more comfortable career territory and certainly financial independence, there are very few good reasons to subjugate yourself to anyone because it is far more work than it has benefit. It is a privilege of my age and of my situation to say no to many things, and to say yes to a few, throwing myself wholeheartedly into the effort. When I do say no, I do so with respect and appreciation. It is right for someone somewhere for sure. Just not me. <\/span><\/p>\n

So don\u2019t look to anyone else\u2019s rule book for what type of opportunities you should say yes to, and which you should turn down. As with anything in life, craft the path that is personally right for you. It won\u2019t look like any other path. And that\u2019s a good thing. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
