Ask anyone who has been through it. I think it comes down to the vast uncertainty it throws into your future. When will it sell? For how much? How many showings until we find our buyer? What will I do next? Nobody knows. It cannot be predicted because homes are such an individual thing. I am a roller coaster of emotions. But why? The roller coaster is tied to me trying to predict the future. I see we are popular on Zillow and I think this means we will sell quickly. I think for sure we will close by Christmas. We have showings and I think we will for sure sell quickly. But then nothing happens and I worry the house is just too unique. I get attached to the idea of a specific future. I get attached to closing by Christmas and moving to some specific apartment and living a specific lifestyle, buying a class A RV and all the details for the next 10 months. Letting go is a running theme in my life. One I have clearly not yet mastered. I am learning to let go of my stuff, and my house, and my definitions of self. Now I need to let go of the future in every regard. I am intentionally entering into a life where I cannot really tell you where I will choose to be next month, or exactly what I will be doing. I am choosing a life of ultimate uncertainty. To attach to any one future is to limit my possibilities. I must learn to let go of any sense of future. I must instead, hold to my intention for freedom, love, discovery and big crazy good. Because that’s what I really want. To have any specific ideas beyond that is to limit the potential for big amazing things. I must learn to embrace the the potential in non-expectation. So, how might I do this? It comes right back to the idea of letting go of everything. Really, truly everything. I will return to my meditation exercises and stop trying to force a specific future. I will instead ask for what I really want: freedom, love, discovery and big crazy good. Let’s see what that does.

A diary reflection on the stress of selling a home, tracing the author’s emotional roller coaster to her attempts to predict the future, and her resolve to let go of specific expectations in favor of open intention.

[5
1806,1812,462,205,149,1810,1813,1811
post-2241","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-diary","tag-countdown-to-launch","tag-embracing-change","tag-future","tag-letting-go","tag-life","tag-life-lessons","tag-potential","tag-uncertainty
For anyone caught in the anxiety of an uncertain transition.
