{"id":2057,"date":"2019-08-21T18:59:19","date_gmt":"2019-08-21T18:59:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kathryncolleen.com\/studio\/?p=2057"},"modified":"2026-08-07T17:12:48","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T21:12:48","slug":"why-do-you-charge-to-attend-events","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kathryncolleen.com\/studio\/why-do-you-charge-to-attend-events\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Do You Charge To Attend Events?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am often invited to events.&nbsp;There are a small number of group events that I DO sometimes show up for without being paid&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Weddings and other major events for family and dear friends<\/li><li>Hippie festivals<\/li><li>Meeting the Dalai Lama (that hasn\u2019t happened yet, but I would SO be there)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In each of these events, I get something out of it. I get to see people I love, I get to be in a beautiful environment, having profound experiences, or I get to meet a personal hero. I will still have to spend a day or longer recovering. But it will be worth it.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Otherwise, I charge. Whether I am speaking, leading a discussion, or just adding my name to the guest list&#8230; the fee is the same. People are often shocked. I certainly mean no disrespect or offense. But try to see it from my perspective.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is every excuse I have been given to date as to why I should spend my limited and precious time and energy to attend their event, at which there is nothing in it for me &#8230; (and my thoughts on it).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It will be fun!&#8230; (No, it won\u2019t. I\u2019m an introvert. Group socializing is the seventh ring of hell. It will most definitely NOT be fun. Quite the opposite. It will drain my energy and I will spend an entire day after it to recover.)<\/li><li>You\u2019ll meet lots of celebrities and big name folks&#8230; (I fail to see why that should matter. They are just people like everyone else. They are not circus animals to be paraded about. What does that do for me? Photos? Ego trips? No, thanks.)<\/li><li>Everyone will be there&#8230; (Except me. I will NOT be there).<\/li><li>The food will be great&#8230; (I am sure it will. The food will also be great in my kitchen, and I won\u2019t have to endure group socializing to get to it.)<\/li><li>You\u2019ll make great contacts!&#8230; (I am not looking for contacts. Contacts are looking for me.)&nbsp;<\/li><li>It\u2019s great exposure!&#8230; (I am not looking for exposure. I have no interest in fame.)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You literally will have to pay to get me there, and pay for my presence. The unbridled energy drain, stress level and the time I will never get back are reason enough. You see, life is too short to do things you don\u2019t like to do. At least if I am paid, I can use the money to forward my mission of global peace and THAT is a reason to show up.\u00a0<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I love you all, but my time, attention and energy are finite and easily drained.
