After thinking again, I decided to keep the diary and keep writing each month a bit to document life. It’s a great opportunity for me to look back over the last month and see what I have learned. Maybe it will be useful to you too. This last month has been an interesting lesson in what I call Third Door solutions. There is an interesting book – The Third Door: The Wild Quest to Uncover How the World’s Most Successful People Launched Their Careers by Alex Banayan. The most important point that I took from the book, is that there is always another way to do something. No matter what situation you find yourself in, there are multiple ways out of it. We can often think of maybe two solutions. But there is almost always a third, rather orthogonal or unusual, approach. And here is the really interesting part. That third, more unusual solution, seems to be the one that works for me every time. It doesn’t just work; the third option seems to offer a simpler and better and sometimes cheaper or more effective solution. You can see that demonstrated in the book, and then try it in your own life. It doesn’t matter what the situation is. If you feel stuck between two options that you do not like, ask yourself: what if you did something completely different? What if you just did not do that thing that you think you have to do? What if your underlying beliefs are wrong and there are other completely different ways to approach it? WHAT IF are the most powerful words in the English language. WHAT IF is responsible for major changes in entire civilizations, and a few awesome changes in your own life if you let it. WHAT IF is an invitation to explore; not a commitment, but the results can be profound and freeing to say the least.
