I seem to be inundated with videos about growing your own sprouts as much as others are inundated with videos about outwitting a narcissist. I guess I’m crunchy and google knows it. I could not resist the temptation as I had never before actually grown something I could eat. It was time to try it! I got a couple of simple half gallon Ball jars (one of which arrived in tact) and some very innovative lids to fit them for sprouting. The whole process is so simple and cheap that you will wonder why you didn’t try it before, even if you aren’t quite as nutty of a health geek as I am. Sprouts are delicious, and impressively nutrient dense, even more so when they have not spent days in a truck and/or on store shelves. This was major fun! Here is the basic method. Get a half gallon glass jar and a sprouting lid (they have mesh tops so that you can rinse and drain them and then let air in). Get some sprouting seeds (seeds grown for sprouting – some seeds are grown to actually not sprout; weird, I know!). Put a half cup of seeds in the jar and fill it half way with cool tap water. Let it sit overnight somewhere away from the sun. For the next few days, rinse and drain the seeds once or twice a day and put them back in their shady place upside down or at an angle so the water can drain out, but air can get in. That’s it. In 3-5 days of repeating this process, you will have an entire half gallon (about 8 cups) of sprouts nearly busting out of your container. I used a mix of about 6-8 different seeds and beans and they sprout together just fine. One serving is about one cup. I will warn you ahead of time that sprouts are really really filling; far more than you would expect. Enjoy! Bonus tip: remember the water that the seeds sat in overnight the first night? It has a lot of beautiful nutrients in it so use it to water your houseplants or your garden. Free plant food!
Here is the video I found most helpful: https://youtu.be/qynti1u9ywE (OK, a little explanation. I am enjoying a mostly raw eating plan and vegans have it nailed when it comes to making a raw diet healthy and delicious – major love! – this channel has all kinds of raw vegan recipes and ideas. She also has some great advice on where to get the best deal on spouting seeds. Her favorite store was sold out so I bought mine on Amazon. I will try her favorite store again for bulk buying in the future.)
Here are the sprouting lids. I am a big fan of these! Not an affiliate link. I just like them. – https://www.amazon.com/Masontops-Screen-Plastic-Mason-Sprouting/dp/B07899HNQM?
