I am noticing a shift in how I define luxury and how I seek luxury. I have always enjoyed the feeling of luxury, although I could not define it. At one point in my twenties, I falsely sought luxury in limo rides to five star restaurants and expensive champagne. But these things feel, ultimately, empty. My definition of luxury did not change, but I stopped seeking it, because it did not feel fulfilling. Recently, I have rediscovered luxury, or the feeling of luxury, in simple and unexpected places. I had the most amazing grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup the other day. It felt like luxury and joy and gratitude. It was simple and comforting and fun. I had a hot bath in a deep tub. It felt like the greatest luxury to be with the water and with self in a state of care and appreciation. I walked a long way and it felt like luxury to have the time and space to commune with the trees. I sat outside while my dogs played and watched the clouds expanding overhead from the heat. It felt like luxury to be with that moment. Maybe luxury is time unencumbered by expectation. Maybe it is being in the moment so completely that luxury is really a letting go of any regret of the past or worry about the future. The luxury to let things be and let things go. The luxury to enjoy that sandwich so completely because there are no worries. Maybe luxury is the feeling of life without burden. I will be sitting with this idea and seeing where it goes.
Meanwhile, consider burying your feet in the dirt or taking a mud bath….
