I have been doing an in depth study of the effect of the Sun Salutation sequence. So what does that mean? I have been doing anywhere from 27-53 rounds of the foundational yoga sequence every day for a few weeks now. I started with 27 rounds per day, working my way up to 53. Why 53? I like prime numbers and it fits my workout time slot beautifully. This is an ancient sequence considered the foundation of asana practice. That being said, it has a lot of surprises hiding in it that I did not notice until I started this study. There will be a whole article coming on this in the future but here is the bullet point version so far.
- each round burns 13.9 calories (based on my own weight of about 150 lbs). So 53 rounds burns 736 calories. Wow! You can tell.
- It makes me feel really well balanced and strong in both body and energy.
- it calms my mind because I have to focus on keeping track. Simple mindfulness technique.
- The magic is as much in the transitions as in the poses.
- It promotes a precision mindset that lasts all day, benefiting everything else that I do.
- and more! As an athlete there is nothing better for recovery. Really!
I will report out more later but for now, if you don’t have any contraindications, give it a try!!
