If it were not for the pandemic, the drive by celebration and the drive by protest may not have been invented. But they are both pretty amazing. Suppose it’s your friend’s birthday. There’s nothing like a convoy of honking cars rolling past your house, emblazoned with birthday wishes in shoe polish on the windows. Even better is the invention of the drive by protest. I have to say… it’s more effective than the traditional in person protest. A swath of vehicles blocking up the roads is a more dramatic visual. Cars make a much larger and more visible billboard for messages. And a drive by protest is a lot louder too. I do believe we have, out of necessity, stumbled upon a much better way to protest. I have seen trailers turned into large scale float-like sculptures and statements much larger and more maneuverable than any political art one might install for a traditional crowd-style protest. I absolutely love it! I hope this method of protest sticks around. As for celebrations… I will be happy to see that get back to in-person presence and joy. Be well, all!
